Who publishes this
Assize Careers is a trading name of Assize Data Ltd, a private limited company registered in England and Wales, company number 17510115. The company builds data products about the UK legal sector from primary sources; the brand page on the corporate site sets out what this one is for.
Assize Careers is not a regulator, professional body, university, law school or official careers service, and it is not part of or endorsed by one. Nothing on this site is legal advice.
Where the figures come from
We publish 30 figures and 8 breakdowns, each one computed from a public register or an official statistic and each one naming its source, its licence and the date it describes. Nothing on this site is an estimate dressed as a count. Where a source does not say something, the page says that instead of filling the gap.
Three habits follow from that, and they are worth stating because plenty of careers sites do the opposite:
- A register counts authorisations, not jobs. We say which, every time. The number of solicitors on the roll is not the number of people working as solicitors, and we never print one as the other.
- We do not copy other people's surveys. The trainee and newly-qualified salary tables you have seen elsewhere are private surveys owned by the publishers who run them. We link to them and we do not reproduce them.
- Our own ranking shows its working. Where we rank anything, the metrics, the weights and the source data are published. Reweighting them yourself is in preparation, and nobody is charged for it until it exists.

How this makes money
From subscriptions, and from nothing else. No employer pays to be listed, to be ranked, or for your details. There is no jobs board, there are no referral fees, and there are no adverts on this site. If we ever publish something a third party has paid for, it will say so on the page.
That is why the figures are free: the data is the argument for the subscription, not the thing being sold back to you.
What we will not do
- Rate or rank individual lawyers, firms or chambers. We publish what the registers show about them. That is not the same thing.
- Reproduce a regulator's register. If you need to check whether a named person is authorised today, go to the regulator. We link to each one.
- Give legal advice, or careers advice dressed as a guarantee. We tell you what the sources say and what an assessor is looking for. The decisions are yours.
- Claim a success rate. Nobody has measured what a practice question does to an application outcome, so nobody should be selling you a number for it. Our practice material has no score attached for that reason.
- Sell your data. Read the privacy notice: it is short, because there is not much to say.
Practice material
Our practice questions are written by us in the published formats. They are not the test publishers' own questions, we do not reproduce any publisher's items or convert your result into their scores or percentiles, and Assize Careers is not affiliated with, authorised by or endorsed by any test publisher, assessment provider, regulator or law firm.
Corrections
If a figure here is wrong, tell us and we will fix it and say that we have. Email enquiries@assizedata.co.uk. We answer in two working days. For anything about your own personal data, the company's data protection page covers this site, and complaints go through the company's complaints procedure.
